Artificial intelligence from Google is developing a new medical direction.
Engadged Magazine reported on a new study conducted by experts on the implementation of Google’s artificial intelligence systems in diagnostic procedures. This is a method to detect up to 50 eye diseases through the study of retinal AI.
AI Google has already established itself as a great assistant in various medical areas. And now Google's Deepmind system is aimed at diagnosing diseases using a special snapshot.
For the detection of diseases using the OCT method. Its essence is reduced to the procedure of visualization of the eye, which allows it to penetrate into the inner layers of the retina in a non-invasive way. OCT images are very similar to ultrasound images of research, but their resolution is significantly higher. The clarity of the picture allows you to identify changes in the structures of the eye without the need to get inside.
The Google team hired experts from the British Eye Center to collaborate on the project.Over the past period, much has been achieved, but one serious problem remained unresolved - it takes almost a week to interpret the results of images through AI. In some cases, such a long waiting time can lead to fatal consequences for the patient.
The work of AI is based on 2 neural networks, one of which translates the obtained images into a special three-dimensional map, establishing a preliminary diagnosis, and the second analyzes the results and confirms or refutes the accuracy of the diagnosis. The second neural network is also able to determine how urgently the patient requires surgical or therapeutic intervention.
It is expected that in case of successful completion of the tests, Deepmind Google technology will be used in all medical institutions in the UK.
