New from Russian experts: portable artificial kidney

Russian scientists presented a portable device with the functionality of an artificial kidney.

The device allows purify bloodwhile requiring replacement of the cleaning solution twice a day. Such an opportunity can make it very popular in the network of medical institutions for use in patients awaiting transplantation of an artificial kidney.

Currently, for such patients there are two methods of treatment - hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis. In the first case, people need to regularly (once every 2-3 days) attend specialized centers. Sometimes, due to difficulties with transportation, patients are forced to look for accommodation near the clinic, so as not to miss another session. The second method involves placing a medical solution in the abdominal cavity of a patient, which can be independently changed several times a day without the need to visit the hospital.

The basis of the invention of Moscow specialists from the Moscow Institute of Electronic Technology is the same principle as in peritoneal dialysis, but the device itself is autonomous. No solutions are introduced into the body, which eliminates the risk of peritonitis and other inflammatory processes. In addition, the constant automatic replacement of the solution can reduce the frequency of its replacement up to 2 times a day.

The first tests have already been successfully carried out on animals. The authors of the methodology intend to submit it to the exhibition “Vuzpromexpo-2017” at the end of this year. Not so long ago, an artificial heart has already been created by specialists of the same institute that can help patients with heart failure.
