The Kroger network has started delivering products to unmanned vehicles.
In one of the largest US supermarket chains Kroger launched a program for unmanned food delivery. At the moment, such delivery is carried out only by one of the stores in Arizona.
A few months ago, Kroger management announced plans to test cargo drone together with a startup Nuro. And now the plans have begun to be translated into reality.
As part of a pilot project, delivery is carried out from a store located in the city of Scottsdale, and so far not specialized Nuro vans, but Toyota Prius cars have been attracted. In case of successful completion of tests, Kroger management expects to establish unmanned transportation from most of its outlets already this autumn.
You can place an order through the seller’s website or through Fry’s special application. As a rule, the goods are delivered to the buyer within a day. The cost of transportation is $ 6.
The only limitation for the drone at the moment is the distance. The van will not go to the buyer through the entire city, it is possible to deliver products only within the area of the store.
The Toyota Prius cars used in the pilot project use autonomous movement technologies created by specialists from Nuro. The authors of the startup are former Google engineers Dave Ferguson and Jiajun Zhu.
