Scientists have created a device that improves the quality of life of diabetics

Specialists from Harvard University have become the authors of an innovation designed to make life easier for patients with diabetes. The novelty is called "artificial pancreas".

The system is a combination of a pump for insulin delivery and a subcutaneous glucose sensor. The sensor monitors the state of the blood and sends indicators to the smartphone via Bluetooth. Focusing on the level of sugar, the pump injects the right amount of insulin into the body. Human involvement is not required.

Over time, in the absence of proper treatment, the disease disrupts the work of all metabolic processes in the human body. As a result, the organs begin to fail.The cause of the most dangerous type 1 diabetes (insulin-dependent) is the uncontrolled destruction of endocrine gland cells. To maintain their health, patients require regular and self-administered insulin injections.

The operation of the device was evaluated during a three-month test with the participation of 30 volunteers. During this period, experts tried to fully assess the possibilities and consequences of applying their innovations. The results of the work are evaluated as successful. The project leader, Professor Harvard Francis Doyle, said that scientists had succeeded in getting very close to the model of the device, which maximally simplifies the life of an insulin-dependent person and improves its quality.

It is expected that in the coming years the invention will be ready for the official presentation on the market of medical equipment.
